I'm making about $44, 000 this year. -I live somewhat modestly. Average monthly spending looks something like this: $807 on rent (my share--I live with two roommates), $30 on phone bill, $65 on utilities, $70 on transportation (subway+Uber+bike commuting), $40 on clothes, $30 on entertainment, $75 on travel (averaged out over a year), and about $110 on groceries. My "bad habit" is spending on take-out, restaurants, and bars, which is probably about $220/month. I save a minimum of $800 a month but I sometimes put in as much as $1500 in a single month. I contribute about $204/month to retirement and my employer does the same (6% of salary each). Now here are the hard things: -I am 100% committed to staying in work that prioritizes helping people who need it and/or working toward the causes that I believe in. I am OK with being paid less than a VP at Goldman Sachs, but I still really want and need to make more than I currently do. I have goals in life, and they do not include living with two roommates forever!
